- Waitakere Christmas Festival Trustee - A free festival for the people of Waitakere held at Parrs Park, Oratia for 7 years now. This was a "dream" of mine that came to fruition in 2002 and attracted an attendance of 8-10,000 people. All performers and workers time and expertise was donated and volunteered.

Chairman of the Taihape Community Board, which also encompasses the smaller townships of Mangaweka and Mataroa, in the Northern Rangitikei. First time in local government and enjoying most of the challenges these new roles now present.
Trained as a Graphic Artist, working many years in that field, and the sign/design industry. Currently running Mangaweka Art Gallery & Home-stay and in-between even produce the odd piece of Artwork! One of these works presently represented on the 2009 Wanganui region phone book cover. Have also had many photographs published in NZ tourism and news publications, particularly in the Rangitikei.

I am a first timer in local government and on a fast learning curve - I have a background in Aviation both Military and Regulatory.
Since being made redundant I have done volunteer work in the community, I coordinate and deliver Meals-On-Wheels, and am a member of the local Red Cross. I have worked in the Red Cross call centre for the Boxing Day tsunami and the recent London bombings. My local government interests are:
- Transport especially the road to and from Kapiti to Wellington
- Civil Defence - are we really prepared in our communities and homes
- Stormwater and flooding.
In general I am a peoples person and enjoy helping others. |

Lyal grew up in Omarama, then served as an officer of the Royal New Zealand Navy for 23 years

In 1998 he moved to Wanaka where he established and operated several businesses, including Da Vinci's Pizzeria. Lyal and his wife Diana have now sold all their businesses. When Lyal is not busy with council and community board commitments, he manages the local town hall and teaches people to drive

Lyal is very interested and involved in community activities and local government. He is a Councillor on the Queenstown Lakes District Council and is the Chairman of the Wanaka Community Board as an appointed member

Lyal is interested in most sports, particularly golf. He enjoys skiing, horse riding and walking his dogs. |
